Why we're in it for the partnership, not the paycheck

  • Partnership
  • Startups

There's a quiet incentive problem in most software work. The shop gets paid when the project ships. So the shop is, subtly, motivated to bill the project, close it, and move to the next one. Everything after handover β€” whether the thing actually works for your users β€” is someone else's problem.

We built ScratLabs to want the opposite. We look for founders worth believing in, and then we want to stay. The value we're chasing isn't the fee a project brings in; it's your goal, pursued like it's our own acorn β€” for the long haul, with no finish line.

That's not a slogan. It changes how the work actually gets done.

What "in it for the partnership" looks like

  • We scope honestly, even when it costs us. If half of what you asked for won't move the needle yet, we'll say so β€” and quote the half that will. A bigger invoice today isn't worth a founder who feels oversold tomorrow.
  • We'll talk you out of the wrong build. We make our living building AI features and products. We'll still tell you when you don't need one yet. Trust compounds; a single padded project doesn't.
  • We don't vanish at "good enough." Launch is the start of the interesting part. We measure, refine, and keep chasing the goal until the product genuinely works for real users.
  • We stay reachable. You worked with the person who built it. That person is still there when you need the next thing β€” no re-onboarding a new team that has to learn your product from scratch.

Why aligned incentives matter more than a rate card

A freelancer optimising for the next invoice and a partner optimising for your success make different decisions on the same project. The partner picks the architecture that's cheaper to maintain, not the one that's faster to bill. The partner flags the risk early instead of quietly shipping around it. The partner tells you to wait when waiting is right.

The best protection you have isn't a longer contract. It's working with someone whose success is tied to yours.

For a startup β€” where the roadmap changes, budgets are tight, and one bad technical decision can cost months β€” that alignment is worth more than shaving a few hundred euros off a quote.

The honest part

None of this means we work for free. ScratLabs is a business, and fair pricing is what makes it sustainable enough to keep showing up. The point isn't that money doesn't matter β€” it's about which way the arrow points. We price fairly so we can stay in the partnership, not the other way around.

If that's the kind of person you want building alongside you β€” for this project and the ones after it β€” tell us what you're building. We reply within a day, honestly, whether or not it turns into an invoice.
